<p> DIED. MAURICE ABRAVANEL, 90, conductor; in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Born in Greece of Spanish-Portuguese parents, Abravanel studied
composing in Berlin under Kurt Weill before making his conducting
debut at 21. With the rise of Nazism, he fled to Paris, where
he became music director of George Balanchine's Les Ballets
1933, then went on to New York City, where, at 33, he became
the Metropolitan Opera's youngest conductor. But it was as music
director of the Utah Symphony Orchestra, which he brought to
prominence from near extinction in 1947, that he made his mark.
